Three men had finished all 37 Honolulu Marathons before yesterday. One of them, Gordon Dugan, did not enter yesterday’s event because he was in Queen’s Hospital with an ankle infection.

The other two, Jerold Chun and Gary Dill, both finished: Chun in 5 hours, 27 minutes and 9 seconds, and Dill in 6:48:57.

Chun, 51, is a molecular biologist and neuroscientist who lives in La Jolla, Calif. He grew up as a member of one of Hawaii’s most famous running families, "The Hunky Bunch." His brothers, Daven (internal and sports medicine) and Hingson (cardiologist), are doctors here.

"They both keep me patched up so I can do this," said Jerold, who flew in after a meeting in New York on Saturday and leaves today for a meeting in London tomorrow. "Airplane travel is not ideal for marathoning. I came down with a horrible cough and asthma attack this year, and Daven helped me a lot."

Chun and Dill both said they were concerned about Dugan.

"That’s horrible," Dill said. "He’s my role model."

Dill, 66, is a semi-retired commercial fisherman. Although he trained more than in recent years, he said this time was difficult.

"I was sweating at two klicks," he said. "My knee gave out at about 12 or 13 miles and it was joggy-walkie, then walkie-walkie."

Tweeting all the way

It was an eventful 26.2 miles for Melissa Chang, and she shared it with her 4,462 followers.

Chang, 45, of Honolulu, is one of Hawaii’s most avid users of social media. The food critic, blogger and public relations pro completed her 13th Honolulu Marathon yesterday. One of the things that made this one unique was that she kept friends up to speed with her progress on Twitter.

"Yes, my first full marathon Tweeted through. I Tweeted during Bay to Breakers and the Nike Women’s 1/2 Marathon this year," Chang said. "I only did 45 Tweets."

Those who know Chang know that’s way below her average for 7 hours, 42 minutes and 59 seconds.

She would have completed the course faster, but a friend she was with collapsed and required her help. Chang credited another marathoner, Ben Plotkin, for providing medical attention to her friend.

There she is Miss Hawaii

Honolulu’s Candes Meijide Gentry, 33, was the top female kamaaina (3:21:06). It was the ninth Honolulu Marathon for Gentry, a former Miss Hawaii (1999), who decided to sign up for the race late last week after finishing sixth among women in last week’s XTERRA Trail Run World Championships.

"I have so many of my friends who were running, and I know some of the race organizers, so I said, ‘You know what? I don’t want to miss out on the fun,’" said Gentry. "To be honest, I had an awesome 18-mile run and then after that, it was whatever it took to get to the finish line."

Marty Muchow, 45, of Mililani, was the first male resident finisher, crossing in 2:49:13. Mariane Uehara, 29, of Honolulu, finished first among resident female runners in 3:13:49.

Former Hawaii Pacific and University High cross country runner Kevin Enriques, 22, of Aiea, placed first among kamaaina men, finishing in 2:53:58.

Honolulu Marathon Hall of Famer Jonathan Lyau, 46, who won 16 of the previous 17 awards for Hawaii-born male finishers, did not compete this year due to injury.

Wheelchair race sweep

Masazumi Soejima of Japan won the men’s wheelchair race in 1:29:51. Wakako Tsuchida, also of Japan, was the women’s wheelchair winner in 1:55:21.

Burrill makes it through

Gladys Burrill, 92, finished the course in 9:53:16. The "Glady-ator" participated in the event for the first time in 2004, and finished for the sixth time in eight tries.
