Nanakuli clinic evacuated after odor sickens patients
About 20 patients and staff at the James and Abigal Campbell Clinic in the Nanakuli Center were evacuated after patients complained of a chemical odor and reported symptoms ranging from eye irritation to nausea, Honolulu Fire Department officials said.
At least six people reported symptoms and were treated at the scene, Fire Captain Terry Seelig reported.
A receptionist at the satellite clinic of the Waianae Comprehensive Health Center said the five doctors resumed seeing patients after 10:30 a.m. when the source of the order couldn’t be found.
Seelig said two businesses in the shopping center next to the clinic, were evacuated while firefighters tried to find the source of the odor. The operations of the U.S. post office and a Sack ‘n Save supermarket at the Waianae end of the center at 87-2070 Farrington Highway were not affected.
The fire department’s hazard materials team, several fire companies and paramedics were summoned just after 9:30 this morning following reports of a chemical odor.
