Alex Smith is the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback yet again.

Coach Mike Singletary made the announcement on his regular KNBR radio show yesterday and the team later tweeted a reference to it.

The move comes a day after Singletary said he was contemplating the switch from Troy Smith following a 34-16 loss at Green Bay last Sunday. The 49ers play host to Seattle on Sunday.

Steelers TE Miller doubtful

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller is doubtful for Sunday’s AFC North game against Cincinnati because of the concussion he suffered from a helmet hit by Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain.

Tight end Matt Spaeth (concussion) has been cleared by doctors to return to practice today. Right tackle Flozell Adams (high ankle sprain) is unlikely to play against Cincinnati.

Player turns down Jets

Free-agent safety Keith Fitzhugh turned down an offer to join the New York Jets to remain a conductor with Norfolk Southern Railroad and stay on track financially while helping support his parents in Atlanta.

"I’ve got something now where I know every two weeks I’m getting a paycheck," Fitzhugh said. "That’s what helps out the most right now."

Fitzhugh had stints in camp with the Jets the past two years. His father, Keith Sr., is disabled and unable to work, while his mother, Meltonia, has been struggling to make ends meet.

"There’s a time when you have to think, ‘Hey, you’ve only got one mom and dad.’ They won’t be here forever, and while they’re here, you’ve got to cherish that time," Fitzhugh said.

Cardinals put QB Hall on IR

The Arizona Cardinals placed quarterback Max Hall on injured reserve and signed former Washington Redskins third-stringer Richard Bartel.

Hall dislocated his left shoulder after relieving starter Derek Anderson in last Sunday’s 19-6 loss to St. Louis.

Arizona third-string quarterback John Skelton finished the game and could start Sunday against Denver.
