So you’ve already done the doorbuster thing and have amassed only a portion of your intended pile of new electronics gifts (not just the ones for yourself) this holiday season — and you’re wondering what to do with the old stuff you’ll need to get rid of, to make room for the new.

Save the date, this Saturday, for a free e-waste collection event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Alaloa Street parking lot mauka of and behind Windward Mall.

Pacific Corporate Solutions and subsidiary Pacific Junk Removal will collect e-waste for proper disposal in California, and will also collect donations of canned goods for the Hawaii Food Bank and brand-new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots Hawaii during the seven-hour event.

The company works with large, publicly traded corporations that do all the shredding and component separation mechanically for proper reclamation and disposal, said David Smith, Pacific Corporate Solutions chief executive officer.

For the elderly, sick, or otherwise unable within a 2-mile radius of the mall, Pacific Junk Removal will make free house calls to pick up e-waste for disposal. "Ray will be quarterbacking on-location with the guys there and dispatching" crew to round up unwanted e-waste, Smith said.

Tutus, people with a truckload of e-waste but no mo’ truck, and others unable to deliver their own junk can call Ray Peralta at 542-7667 to schedule pickup.

Collection is also open to businesses as well as individuals, with no limit on the quantity that will be accepted, Smith said.

The no-limit-type collection can net surprising results, as Smith learned the hard way on the Leeward Coast in another seven-hour period. "We got 80,000 pounds in one day. We didn’t expect that much," Smith said. Employees who arrived to set up the site at 6:30 a.m. were finally able to go home at 11 p.m., and Smith and another employee worked until 6 the next morning to clear the site for a church group the next day. Pacific Corporate Solutions receives payment from its mainland processors of e-waste, which is one way it makes its money.

For this Saturday’s collection, TV sets, microwaves and batteries are not part of the e-waste drive, but the companies will accept videocassette recorders, computers, monitors, laptops, printers, fax machines, servers and miscellaneous telecom equipment.

Here’s the plan: Friday night, load up the car with the old, clunky tube-style computer monitor and make-die-dead tower that ran your beloved Windows 95 like a charm until it went kaput — drop it off with the folks at Pacific Corporate Solutions first thing in the morning — and reload all that newly empty vehicular cargo space with more stuff for Christmas (not just the stuff for yourself).
