Residents will be able to review and comment on the proposed Koolau Loa Sustainable Communities Plan at a public hearing Tuesday.

The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Kahuku High School cafeteria.

After comments on this public draft are received and evaluated, the department will prepare an updated version to be submitted to the Planning Commission for review, potential revisions, and approval at a public meeting where the public may testify, the city said in a news release.

The plan then goes to the City Council for further review, potential revisions and final approval at another public meeting where the public may testify.

City officials say the revised plan, released in October, addresses the need for jobs and affordable workforce housing by including a new community in Malaekahana and expansion of Brigham Young University and the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie. The draft revised plan also recognizes Turtle Bay Resort’s existing land use entitlements. 

Community groups have been at odds over the plan, leading some to oppose the reappointment of David Tanoue as director of the Department of Planning and Permitting.

Those opponents say they are hopeful the Council will closely scrutinize the community plan as it moves forward.
