Oahu residents can expect wet weather until tomorrow, as the state’s rainy season is well under way.

The forecast for today calls for frequent showers, with rainfall up to 2 inches possible. National Weather Service forecasters say the rain is the result of a front coming down from the north.

"The front will be to the south by Friday, so it’ll dry out by then," said forecaster Stephen Harrison. "Showers will focus on windward and mauka areas, but some of the showers will be blown to leeward areas because we have some stronger tradewinds coming in."

Heavy showers are expected due to instability in the atmosphere, but Harrison said thunderstorms are unlikely.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy, forecasters said, with showers expected before noon.

Maui and Big Island leeward areas are likely to see heavy and frequent showers through today, while Kauai will see only scattered showers.

The National Weather Service also issued a high surf advisory yesterday afternoon for eastern shores of Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Big Island and Niihau, in effect until Saturday morning.

Rough surf is expected to reach heights of 6 to 10 feet along windward shores.
