For now, shooting strokes are ahead of the legs at ‘Iolani.

Kylie Maeda made a point of that, hitting three treys in a span of just over 2 minutes in the second quarter to break open a close game as the Raiders ran away from Mid-Pacific 65-55 last night.

A crowd of about 100 at the Raiders’ gym saw fifth-ranked ‘Iolani even its mark at 1-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball standings. Sixth-ranked Mid-Pacific dropped its second league game in as many outings.

Saphyre Rezentes scored 17 points and post Alex Masaquel tallied 11 points and seven rebounds within a platoon system implemented by ‘Iolani (5-3 overall).

Maeda finished with nine points.

"We were able to shoot the ball a lot better than the Kamehameha game," coach Eddie Maruyama said, noting that rebounding was another big improvement.

The Raiders outrebounded the Owls 37-20, allowing just two offensive caroms in the first half. The high-pressure, uptempo pace also resulted in 26 turnovers, but Maruyama expects his team to gain conditioning with more practice time.

Taylor Babbitt led MPI (5-3 overall) with 17 points and five boards. Mahina Docktor added 13 points, and guard Kiana Robertson tallied seven points, five rebounds and four steals.

"They’re usually hitting all their 3s, but tonight they were off, so I was kind of surprised," said Maeda, who sat most of last season with a knee injury, but shows no effects now.

After struggling in a 47-45 home loss to Kamehameha on Saturday, the Raiders were well equipped with an airtight fullcourt press and a sticky 2-3 matchup zone.

"We came back from a loss. We have to keep moving forward," Rezentes said.

There were four early lead changes — a 3-pointer by Pua Kanekoa gave MPI an 11-9 lead — but Abrianna Johnson-Edwards swished a trey from the right corner on an inbounds play to give the Raiders the lead for good late in the opening quarter.

‘Iolani’s hot shooting created opportunities via the press. The second-quarter results said it all: 2-for-13 shooting and six turnovers by the visiting Owls.

Maeda, a 5-foot-7 junior, drilled a trey from the right corner, then another from the top, and after her third, ‘Iolani had a 26-15 lead.

Johnson-Edwards (nine points, four steals) went to the bench with her third foul midway through the second quarter, but the Raiders kept rolling. A 3-pointer by Rezentes from the right wing helped give ‘Iolani a 35-21 lead at the half.

Mid-Pacific shot 1-for-10 in the third quarter as the home team pulled away. The Raiders scored 12 points in a row, including eight by Rezentes, for a 47-21 bulge.

A 3-point bomb by reserve Kaitlyn Shikada gave ‘Iolani its biggest lead, 51-22, with 4 minutes to go in the third. By then, Maruyama had cleared his bench for good.

‘Iolani shot just 39 percent from the field (19-for-49), but was sharp from beyond the 3-point arc (7-for-16, 44 percent). MPI shot 2-for-19 from 3-point range.

"I’m glad they challenged themselves, even though the score got out of hand in the first half," Owls coach Wes Masuda said. "We didn’t rotate on defense. You can’t leave Kylie open."

The teams meet two more times in regular-season play.
