Three teenage boys and a 23-year-old man were speeding in a stolen 2006 blue Scion multipurpose vehicle in Wahiawa early yesterday when the teenage driver lost control and crashed, killing himself and his front-seat passenger and sending his other passengers to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition, Honolulu traffic investigators said.

The driver is believed to be 16 or 17 years old, police said.

He lost control of the Scion at 12:50 a.m. while trying to navigate Kaukonahua Road’s infamous S-turn in light rain.

The accident occurred in the eastbound lane of Kaukonahua Road, three-quarters of a mile northwest of Wilikina Drive, police said.

The driver failed to negotiate a left-hand bend in the road and hit a wooden utility pole, which flipped the Scion onto its side, police said. The Scion then crashed into a large, metal utility pole, police said.

The driver and his front-seat passenger, 23, were pinned in the wreckage and died at the scene of internal injuries, police said.

The 17- and 19-year-old passengers in the back seat were taken by paramedics to the Queen’s Medical Center.

The Scion was stolen, but the theft had not been reported, police said.

It was unknown whether anyone was wearing seat belts or whether drugs and alcohol were factors. But excessive speed was a factor in the crash, police said.

Honolulu police closed Kaukonahua Road in both directions between Wilikina Drive and Farrington Highway around 2:30 a.m. to investigate the crash. The road reopened around 5:15 a.m.

The deaths were the 56th and 57th traffic fatalities on Oahu this year, compared with 49 last year.
