Speakers will discuss ties between America and Japan

Hiroshima Gov. Hidehiko Yuzaki, U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye and the U.S. Pacific Command’s Adm. Robert Willard will be among the speakers at an Asia-Pacific symposium this week.

The symposium, titled "The Road Ahead for U.S.-Japan Collaboration in the Asia Pacific Region," marks the 50th anniversary of the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Mutual Cooperation.

"The Road Ahead for U.S.-Japan Collaboration in the Asia Pacific Region" symposium will be from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Hawai’i Convention Center.

The symposium is free to members of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association, Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, Pacific Forum CSIS and the United Japanese Society of Hawaii. It is $20 for all other attendees.

The discussion will focus on sustaining the alliance, as well as exploring Hawaii’s relationship with Japan, particularly in the context of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum that will be held in Honolulu next year.

Clean-energy initiatives and business opportunities with Okinawa will also be discussed, according to a news release from the Japan-America Society of Hawaii.

» Former U.S. Ambassador to Japan Thomas Schieffer.
» Stanford University professor Daniel Okimoto.
» Kazuyoshi Umemoto and Shinichi Hosono of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
» Steve Lindenberg, senior adviser on renewable energy for the U.S. Department of Energy.
» Retired Navy Adm. Thomas Fargo, former commander of U.S. Pacific Command.
