Maui restaurateur Beverly Gannon threw an 80th birthday bash for husband Joe Gannon last Sunday night at their home, with 200 of their close pals in attendance. The Gannons, proprietors of three eateries (Haliimaile General Store, Gannon’s and Joe’s Bar and Grill), hosted the likes of actors Owen Wilson and Richard Chamberlain, NBA coach Don Nelson, TV personalities Guy Hagi and Kim Gennaula, music whiz Mick Fleetwood and talent booker Kika Matsumoto.

Joe Gannon has a fascinating, under-the-radar past, linked to music; he’s an old pal of Kingston Trio’s Dave Guard and Nick Reynolds, even performing with Dave Guard and the Calypsonians before the act was redubbed the Kingston Trio with the addition of Bob Shane. Gannon also was a behind-the-scener for the likes of Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Bill Cosby, Teddy Pendergrass, Julio Iglesias, Barry Manilow and Luther Vandross before settling on dining on the Valley Isle with wife Beverly, a magician in the kitchen. …

PERSONALITIES: Folks who took in the one-night bonanza "Portuguese Kings of Comedy" featuring Augie T and Frank De Lima recently at the Hawaii Theatre are still buzzing about that ingenious entrance from the pit. De Lima, with a bandanna on his head, strummed a white stand-up bass (disguised with white contact paper) to replicate Robert Cazimero, and Augie T, with a faux beard, sat on a cube playing guitar, mimicking Roland Cazimero — an ingenious parody of the Brothers Cazimero’s "At Home in the Islands." It was a precious moment from an explosive evening of nonstop fun, with Augie T poking fun at his mom and admiration for De Lima (as a youth, he did De Lima’s "Abdula Fataai" and won a talent show), and De Lima targeting Linda Lingle via his Furlough Friday song, with the sing-along line, "Friday come and we gotta stay home." …

SIGHT ‘EMS: Sir Michael Caine, in town filming "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," dined with wife Shakira at Chef Mavro a few nights back, enjoying Mavro’s Provence-inspired Opakapaka Bourride "Moderne" with sea asparagus tempura from the North Shore. Caine’s iconic voice, with the British clip, turned heads at neighboring tables, but diners respected his privacy, prompting award-winning chef George Mavrothalassitis to note, "I think we’ve become a hideaway for celebrities — no paparazzi allowed at King and McCully!" …

Gib Arnold, the UH men’s basketball coach, ran into Manoa Valley Theatre board member Donna Bebber at the Opera Ball recently, and he told her that he took in MVT’s "A Christmas Carol" (which just extended its run through Dec. 3), where he was plucked from the house by one of the actors during a brief bit of audience-participation dancing. Fancy footwork works, on the court and on the stage. By the way, the play-within-a-play, with a company of actors enacting the holiday tale about miserliness and charity, is an imaginative and sweetly satisfying concoction, like rum-spiked eggnog. …

ITEMIZATIONS: Bruno Mars, the Hawaii lad who used to be a Little Elvis impersonator as a child, is included in People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive edition (cover boy is Ryan Reynolds), among the 20-something studs. Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan, the bromance duo of the "Hawaii Five-0" reboot, were also recognized — the former for his hot bod, the latter as a 30-something hottie. …

Good to see more and more locals getting guest slots on CBS’s "Five-0." Like Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa and Mark Dacascos. Hiroyuki-Tagawa has been somewhat invisible since relocating to the peace and quiet of Sedona, Ariz., but Dacascos has been active as the Chairman on the Food Network’s "Iron Chef" and "The Next Iron Chef." …

Musical chairs at "Hawaii News Now," with Grace Lee departing "Sunrise" last week, heading for KPIX in San Francisco for reporting and anchor chores; Tannya Joaquin gets the wake-up call beginning Jan. 3.
