Pelayo, Hurley picked to region team
Hawaii Pacific junior libero Kyra Pelayo and Hawaii-Hilo junior hitter Hillary Hurley were named to the NCAA Division II women’s volleyball West Region team.
Pelayo was named to the first team, the first Sea Warrior so honored since Barbara Martin in 2005. The PacWest libero of the year ranks third nationally in digs (6.72 dps) and set the HPU single-season dig record with 598 this season.
Hurley was named to the all-region second team. The PacWest player of the year is second in NCAA II in kills per set (4.71).
Oride falls short at Polo Junior Classic
Florida’s Jaye Marie Green defeated Kauai High senior Kelli Oride, 5 and 4, yesterday in the third round of the Polo Golf Junior Classic.
Oride reached the Sweet 16 at PGA National Resort & Spa in Florida. She birdied the first hole yesterday, but lost to Green’s eagle. Bogeys on the next two holes left Oride 3 down, and she could never get closer than 2 down again.
The Classic invites 78 girls and 78 boys ages 12-18, from 26 states and 10 foreign countries. The top 32 advanced to match play in each bracket. That included Oride and Punahou seventh-grader Allisen Corpuz.
