5 Hawaii surfers win their heats at Sunset
Five Hawaii surfers were among the heat winners yesterday in the first day of the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach yesterday.
Flynn Novak, Hank Gaskell, Joel Centeio, Sunny Garcia and Myles Padaca were all victorious in the round of 128.
Hawaii’s Albee Layer, TJ Barron, Pancho Sullivan and Jesse Merle-Jones were among the others advancing to the round of 96.
Only nine of 16 heats were completed in the round of 128. The event is the second contest in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and will continue today, surf permitting.
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore won her first heat in the O’Neill Women’s World Cup of Surfing to advance into the quarterfinals.
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel, Alana Blanchard and Melanie Bartels also made it through to the quarterfinals.
