A 22-year-old pedestrian crossing South King Street was struck and killed by a car which fled the scene late last night, police said.

The man was hit about 11:05 p.m. by a dark-colored sedan traveling east on South King near Victoria Street and the Neal Blaisdell Center. Police said today that the victim had massive head and bodily injuries. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene at 11:24 p.m., according to Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.

It is unknown if the pedestrian was in a crosswalk or if the driver had been drinking, but police said speed may have been involved.

Police said the car should have extensive front-end damage and may have a cracked windshield. Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call police at 529-3499.

Last night’s accident was the 18th pedestrian traffic fatality on Oahu so far this year. There were 10 pedestrian fatalities recorded in all of 2009, and 14 in 2008.

Police and community advocates said last week that the increase in pedestrian deaths after several years of declines is a major concern for the community.
