Hiker stung by bees is rescued

Firefighters rescued a hiker who started feeling ill yesterday after bees stung him on the Maunawili Demonstration Trail in Waimanalo.

The man was unable to hike out and requested help at 2:54 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Capt. Gary Lum.

A Fire Department helicopter dropped two firefighters onto the trail about 3 miles from the trail head, near the Pali Highway hairpin turn.

They put the man in a net, and the helicopter carried the man to waiting paramedics at Maunawili Valley Neighborhood Park about 3:30 p.m., Lum said.

4 boys arrested in Kalihi robbery

Police arrested four teenage males following a robbery at a Kalihi minimart Friday morning.

Police said one boy entered the Middle Street store to see who was inside and walked out.

Three older males then walked in, assaulted a female clerk, 55, and fled with money and merchandise, police said. Officers arrested the suspects, ages 13, 15, 17 and 18. The three older males were booked for investigation of second-degree robbery, and all four on suspicion of second-degree trespassing. They were released without charges pending investigation.

Drowning was cause of diver’s death

A 59-year-old free diver who died Thursday afternoon in Kaneohe Bay had drowned, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office said yesterday.

Melvin Lima was diving with his brother when he didn’t return to the boat Thursday about 1:50 p.m., police said.

The Fire Department, Coast Guard and Navy searched for more than an hour until the Fire Department helicopter spotted his body at about 3:10 p.m., floating off the Kaneohe side of Kapapa Island.

Man rescued after cliff fall

Two Big Island rescue helicopters helped retrieve an unconscious 39-year-old man who had fallen at a cliff area known as Ladders in the Kapaau section of North Kohala about 2 p.m. yesterday.

The victim was flown to the North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition.

Hawaii County officials said the Kapaau man was descending a 50-foot cliff with a rope to a remote fishing area when he fell 15 to 20 feet to a rocky coastline inaccessible to wheeled vehicles.

The man was going coastline fishing with two friends, men ages 27 and 25, when he fell. The friends called 911 and rendered aid.
