Leilehua, UH-Hilo alum closes in at PGA Q-School

Former Leilehua and University of Hawaii-Hilo golfer Nick Mason made another big move up the leaderboard yesterday and has the best shot of Hawaii golfers at advancing at PGA Tour Q-School.

Playing in the Second Stage at Panama City, Fla., Mason jumped into 23rd, firing a third-round 67 with six birdies. The top 19 or 20 from each of the six Second Stage sites play in the final stage, Dec. 1-6 in Florida. The low 25 and ties there are exempt on the PGA Tour next year, with everyone else earning status on the Nationwide Tour.

At the Second Stage qualifier at Bayonet Course in Seaside, Calif., 2006 state high school champ Chan Kim has a share of 52nd going into today’s final round. Kim shot 70 yesterday and is at 3-over-par 219.

Makawao’s Samuel Cyr, a two-time NAIA champ, is tied for 60th at 75–222. Moanalua High graduate Tadd Fujikawa is another shot back after a 73 and is tied for 63rd.

Parker McLachlin had his best round, but it wasn’t nearly good enough to advance from Humble, Texas. McLachlin shot even-par 72 to finish at 301 and tie for 63rd in a field of 73.

Turtle Bay representative Tony Finau is 52nd at the TPC Craig Ranch site in Texas. He shot 73 and is at 1-over 217.

John Morse, the 1995 Hawaiian Open champion, earned regular membership on the Champions Tour yesterday at its final qualifier, played on TPC Eagle Trace, in Coral Springs, Fla.

Morse tied for fifth at 71–276. The top 12 earned playing privileges next year. Barry Lane, who used to represent Kapalua on the European Tour, was 14th at 71–283.
