Brennan, 2 women injured in collision

JOAQUIN SIOPACK / JANUARY 2008
Colt Brennan and his girlfriend, Shakti Stream, leave Kahala Mall with a security escort after members of the University of Hawaii Warriors football team signed autographs for fans.

Former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan was in serious condition at the Queen’s Medical Center last night, suffering multiple injuries from a two-vehicle collision yesterday morning in Kona.

Also seriously injured was a 47-year-old woman who was driving a Saab sedan that was struck head-on by the car in which Brennan was a passenger.

A witness said the roof of the Saab had to be torn open to pull out the woman, who has not yet been identified. She was taken to North Community Hospital in Waimea with serious leg injuries. Yesterday afternoon she was transferred to a hospital on Oahu.

Brennan’s father, Terry, said, "This is our worst nightmare," noting his son suffered cracked ribs, an injury to his left collarbone and possible head trauma. "You always worry about safety, whether you’re in Hawaii or on the mainland."

WHAT HAPPENED

Colt Brennan was a passenger in an SUV driven by his girlfriend, Shakti Stream. They were headed north on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the 90-mile marker at about 9:30 a.m. yesterday. Stream told police the brake malfunctioned, causing the SUV to cross the center line and collide head-on with a Saab sedan driven by a 47-year-old woman, a source said, adding that neither vehicle was speeding.

WHO WAS HURT

» Colt Brennan: He suffered cracked ribs, an injured left collarbone and possible head trauma; taken to Queen’s hospital yesterday.

» Shakti Stream: Brennan’s girlfriend sustained a broken collarbone; was hospitalized in Kona overnight.

» Second driver: An unidentified woman, 47, had serious leg injuries; taken to an Oahu hospital yesterday.

Terry and Betsy Brennan will travel to Honolulu this morning from the family home in Irvine, Calif. He said his son was in stable condition and did not have life-threatening injuries. A medical center statement described Brennan’s condition as serious last night.

"We’re upset," Terry Brennan said. "We’re hopeful all of the victims will be OK."

Police said Brennan was a passenger in an SUV driven by Shakti Stream, 27, his girlfriend and a Kona resident.

The SUV was traveling north on Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the 90-mile marker at about 9:30 a.m.

According to a source, Stream told police the brake malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to cross the center line and collide head-on with the Saab. A source said neither vehicle was speeding.

Stream suffered a broken collarbone and remained in the Kona Community Center overnight. She is expected to be released as early as today.

According to a source, Brennan, who appeared to be in shock, had to be restrained in order to be treated at the scene. He also was taken to the Kona medical center, where he underwent a CT scan.

He was later taken to Oahu and admitted into Queen’s, undergoing several tests into the evening.

Terry Brennan said his son was "sedated" to help ease travel to Oahu.

Brennan enjoyed a storybook career with the Warriors, choosing to return to UH for his senior season rather than trying to go into the National Football League.

He led the Warriors to a 12-0 regular season in 2007 and finished third in Heisman Trophy voting. But the Warriors were routed in the New Year’s Day Sugar Bowl in 2008.

Brennan, a record-setting quarterback for the Warriors, was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

But his career was short-circuited by four surgeries, including a hip operation that forced him to miss the entire 2009 season. He was released before the start of training camp this summer.

Brennan then signed with the Oakland Raiders, lasting through the preseason before being cut.

He was training in Arizona before completing a workout program last month.

Terry Brennan said his son spent the past few weeks with Stream on the Big Island. He said his son and Stream were en route to a volleyball event when they were involved in the accident.

"This is a sad situation," UH associate head coach Rich Miano said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Colt and his family and the two women injured and their families. We wish them all a healthy recovery."
