9 file for Apo’s Council seat ahead of today’s deadline
Nine candidates so far have filed to run for the City Council seat vacated by Todd Apo.
The deadline for candidates to file is 4:30 p.m. today with the city clerk.
Apo, who represented Leeward Coast-Ewa District 1, resigned last week to take a job with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts in Hawaii.
An all-mail special election will be conducted to fill the vacancy. Voting is set to conclude Dec. 29.
In the race so far are former state Rep. Bob McDermott, Mel Kahele of Local 625 of the Ironworkers Union and Matthew LoPresti, a Hawaii Pacific University assistant professor of philosophy and humanities.
Also in the race are Tom Berg, Celeste (Lacaden) Lacuesta, Chris Lewis, Rose Martinez, John P. Roco and Gary Kahinano Velleses.

Berg and Lacuesta both ran unsuccessfully for state House and Senate offices, respectively, this year.
Roco lost in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
Health tips for seniors
Senior citizens, their family members and caregivers can get information on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle at a health fair tomorrow at Wahiawa Hongwanji Mission, 1067 California Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon. Personnel from Wahiawa General Hospital will provide health screenings and flu shots, and other health providers will also be there. Information: 622-4320.
