Hawaii’s Samuel Cyr, Tadd Fujikawa and Chan Kim are in the bottom half midway through the PGA Tour’s Second Stage qualifier at Bayonet Course in Seaside, Calif.

Cyr, from Makawao, shot 2-over-par 74 yesterday and is tied for 53rd at 147. Kim, the 2006 state high school champion, also shot 74 and is two shots behind Cyr. Fujikawa, a 19-year-old Moanalua graduate, bogeyed the first three holes and shot his second straight 75. He has a share of 63rd in the field of 75.

Honolulu’s Parker McLachlin, who has played on the PGA Tour the past four years, has one day left to improve his status at Humble, Texas. McLachlin fired a third-round 78 and is tied for 66th at 13-over 229 going into today’s final round.

Leilehua graduate Nick Mason moved up 20 spots with a 1-under-par 70 at the Second Stage in Panama City, Fla. Mason, who played the back nine in 3-under, is tied for 41st at the halfway point with a total of 147. Tony Finau, who represents Turtle Bay, dropped to 46th at the McKinney, Texas, site after shooting a 2-over 74. He is at 144.

The top 19 or 20 from each of the six Second Stage sites play in the final stage, Dec. 1-6 in Florida. The low 25 and ties there are exempt on the PGA Tour next year, with everyone else earning status on the Nationwide Tour..

BROWN TAKES LEAD AT HONG KONG OPEN

Mark Brown made a late charge to top the first-round leaderboard yesterday at the Hong Kong Open, shooting an 8-under-par 62 for a one-stroke lead.

The New Zealander surged late at the Fanling course to overtake two-time runner-up Rory McIlroy, the early leader after capitalizing on calm conditions in the morning. McIlroy finished second in Hong Kong each of the past two years.

McIlroy was joined in second place by India’s Jeev Milkha Singh, with Englishman Simon Dyson and Denmark’s Soren Hansen in a tie for fourth. U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell was a shot further back with five others in a tie for sixth at 5 under.
