Hawaii golfers trail at PGA qualifying

Samuel Cyr’s 1-over-par 73 led the Hawaii trio in yesterday’s opening round of the PGA Tour’s second-stage qualifier at Bayonet Course in Seaside, Calif.

Cyr, a two-time NAIA champ from Makawao, has a share of 42nd. Chan Kim and Tadd Fujikawa shot 75s and are tied for 61st among 75 golfers. The top 19 and ties go to the final stage.

Kim won the 2006 state high school championship here before moving to Arizona. Fujikawa, a Moanalua freshman that year, was third.

On the second day of the second stage at Redstone Golf Club in Humble, Texas, Parker McLachlin followed up a 77 with a 74 and is tied for 59th at the halfway point. The top 19 and ties also advance there. McLachlin, the 1996 state high school champion out of Punahou, has played the PGA Tour the past four years and won the 2008 Reno-Tahoe Open.

Leilehua alum Nick Mason double-bogeyed his last hole to shoot a 77 in Panama City, Fla., where he is tied for 61st after the first round. The top 19 advance from there as well.

Tony Finau, who represents Turtle Bay, is tied for 13th at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas after firing a 2-under-par 70. That site advances the top 20 and ties.

Those who advance from the six second-stage qualifiers play Dec. 1-6 in Florida.

The low 25 and ties there are exempt on the PGA Tour next year, with everyone else earning status on the Nationwide Tour.
