Isagawa in Scotland for Jr. Ryder Cup

Hawaii high school girls champion Cassy Isagawa is in Scotland to play on the Junior Ryder Cup Team. Isagawa, a senior at Baldwin who is headed to Oregon next fall, earned a slot on the team by winning the Junior PGA Championship this summer.

The junior version of the Cup will be Monday and Tuesday at Gleneagles Resort’s PGA Centenary Course in Perthshire. The format will be the same as the Ryder Cup — foursomes, mixed four-ball and singles match play.

Isagawa’s U.S. teammates include Jordan Speith and Jim Liu, the last two U.S. Junior champions, and Doris Chen, winner of the U.S. Girls Junior Championship. At 14, Liu is the youngest U.S. Junior champion in history.

The European team includes three players returning from the 2008 event.

The juniors will also play a "friendship" match next Thursday, the day before the start of the Junior Ryder Cup, at Celtic Manor Resort in Wales.

The Junior Ryder Cup started as an exhibition in 1995.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia played and, four years later, was part of Europe’s Ryder Cup team. LPGA member Suzann Pettersen participated in the 1997 and ’99 Junior Ryder Cup tournaments before becoming Norway’s top female golfer and taking part in five Solheim Cups.

Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, was on the victorious 2004 team, and American Hunter Mahan played in 1999 before becoming one of Paul Azinger’s picks for the 2008 Ryder Cup.

Europe leads the Junior Ryder Cup 3-2-1, but the U.S. captured the last one by a score of 22-2 in 2008.
