Higgins eyes record

Weber State quarterback Cameron Higgins, a Saint Louis alumnus, is the Big Sky Conference's career leader in touchdown passes with 97.

Midway through his freshman season, Cameron Higgins was already setting records.

As a senior, records seem to be falling every week.

Weber State’s highly decorated quarterback is preparing for what could be his final game in a Wildcats uniform when the Football Championship Subdivision school plays at Texas Tech on Saturday.

Higgins, a 2006 Saint Louis graduate, needs 114 passing yards in his final regular-season game to top the school’s all-time list. Last week, he became the Big Sky Conference’s career leader with 97 touchdown passes in a 27-26 win over Northern Arizona.

"It’s cool to have the records I guess, but for me it’s more about the experiences I’ve had with the team and hanging around all the guys," Higgins said.

Right off the bat, Higgins made his mark on the Weber State program. In his eighth game, he led the Wildcats to a 73-68 victory over Portland State, a game that set an NCAA record for most points in regulation. Higgins accounted for 440 total yards and seven touchdowns, throwing for four and rushing for three more.

From then on, Higgins knew he was a part of something special.

"(That game) made me realize that instead of just looking at this as me coming here to do my four years, I can probably leave my mark around here and make a name for myself at Weber," he said.

» School: Weber State

» Position: quarterback

» Class: senior

» Height: 6 feet 2

» High school: Saint Louis (2006)

» Notes: Holds the Big Sky Conference career record with 97 touchdown passes; one of three Big Sky QBs to throw for more than 12,000 yards in a career; 2008 conference player of the year; holds the school record for total offense

He’s clearly done that. After he was named the conference’s newcomer of the year in ’07, Higgins was named the Big Sky Conference offensive player of the year as a sophomore.

Today, he’s one of only three players ever in the conference to total over 12,000 passing yards in a career, and his 104 total touchdowns is a school record.

He’s also played a vital role in Weber State’s recruiting pipeline to the islands. He’s one of 12 players on the team who graduated from high school in Hawaii, a list that includes Michael Hoke, a 2008 Kamehameha graduate who backs him up at QB.

Hoke has filled in for Higgins in each of the previous two games, including last week’s victory over Northern Arizona, in which he threw for 168 yards and a TD.

"He came in last week and pretty much won the game for us," Higgins said. "(Hoke) is my boy. I try to help him with everything, especially things like studying game film, so hopefully I had a hand in helping him play well for us."

The Wildcats need a victory over the Red Raiders this weekend to qualify for the postseason, otherwise it’ll be Higgins’ final game.

He’s had to battle through a knee injury that caused him to be taken out of a game and a sprained ankle that cut short last weekend’s game, but says he’s ready.

"Whatever happens, it’s going to be fun to play a team of that high caliber," Higgins said. "I’m just looking forward to having a good experience and going out there and playing well and trying to go out with a bang."

The Higgins name will still live on in college football regardless of the outcome Saturday. Cameron’s brother, Zach, is a junior safety for the Wildcats and another brother, Jeremy, is a freshman QB at Utah State.
