Suyetsugu ties for 16th in qualifier

Former Rainbow Wahine Xyra Suyetsugu fired a 2-under-par 70 in the final round of the 12th annual LPGA Futures Tour Qualifying Tournament yesterday, tying for 16th in Florida. The Roosevelt graduate opened with a 69 and shot 76 in both the second and third rounds to finish at 3 over par.

Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim (77–293) tied for 26th. Kim, who won the 2006 Women’s Amateur at 14, has already qualified for the LPGA’s Final Qualifying Stage next month. Leilehua graduate Britney Choy, the 2004 state high school champion, shot 80–289 to tie for 63rd.

Wake Forest senior Natalie Sheary was medalist, shooting 2-under-par 70 at Lake Region Yacht & Country Club yesterday to win by four shots at 9-under 279.

The field started with 308 players from 38 countries. Exempt and non-exempt status for the 2011 LPGA Futures Tour will be determined after the final qualifying event.

» The Big Island’s Mark Morrison failed to advance yesterday at the Champions Tour first stage qualifying in Seaside, Calif. Morrison shot a final-round 79 at the Bayonet Course and finished at 314. The top 15, at 303 and better, moved on to the final stage. Dick Mast was medalist at 76–289.

Others that advanced included Vijay Singh’s brother, Krishna, and Damon Green, caddie for 2009 Sony Open champ Zach Johnson. The top five at the final stage are fully exempt next year, with the next seven conditionally exempt.

Soccer clinic features Natasha Kai

Olympic gold medalist Natasha Kai will headline a free youth soccer clinic from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. next Saturday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.

The former University of Hawaii star will sign autographs at the end of the clinic.

Registration for youths ages 5 to 17 is 1 to 4 p.m. today at the Verizon Wireless store in Pearl Highlands Center and 1 to 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Verizon Wireless store in Windward Mall.

Clinic participants will receive a free soccer jersey, baseball cap and sports sack. The first 100 to register at one of the Verizon Wireless stores will receive a free soccer ball the day of the clinic.

Kai, from Kahuku, is a member of the U.S. women’s national soccer team and the Sky Blue Football Club. She was a three-time player of the year in the Western Athletic Conference and first-team all-conference four years.

New time for softball doubleheader

The game time for today’s exhibition softball doubleheader between Hawaii and Chaminade has been moved to 2 p.m. at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The first game between the Rainbow Wahine and Silverswords was originally scheduled for noon. Last night’s series opener was canceled due to rain and soggy field conditions.

BYUH opens with exhibition loss

Jimmer Fredette scored 18 points to lead No. 24-ranked Brigham Young to an 85-60 victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii in a men’s exhibition basketball game in Provo, Utah.

Senior Marques Whippy had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Seasiders, ranked No. 24 in NCAA Division II. Rory Patterson had 15 points and Jet Chang 13 for BYU-Hawaii.
