Woman struck by vehicle dies

A woman in her 60s died after being hit by a vehicle in front of the Makaha Surfside condominium complex yesterday. The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene on Farrington Highway at 10:53 a.m. before being taken in critical condition to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

No other information was immediately available.

Pedestrian critically hurt in accident

A 25-year-old Honolulu man was critically injured late Monday after being hit by a car as he crossed Kapahulu Avenue. Honolulu police said the man was struck at about 11:11 p.m. by a Mazda sedan rental car driven by a 48-year-old California man.

The victim was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center with head and other injuries, police said. The driver is not suspected of speeding or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but police said alcohol may have been a factor for the pedestrian, who was wearing dark clothing. Police are unsure whether he was in a crosswalk when he was struck.

The accident occurred near the intersection of Kanaina Avenue and closed three southbound lanes of Kapahulu Avenue for about three hours as police investigated.

Man arrested in sex assault of teen

A 44-year-old man was arrested yesterday on seven counts of sexual assault involving a 15-year-old girl.

The victim reported the incident last Wednesday. The suspect was arrested at a North Cane Street address and released pending further investigation.

Councilman sentenced on Big Island

HILO » Disregarding a plea agreement, Circuit Court Judge Ronald Ibarra has sentenced Hawaii County Councilman Kelly Greenwell to 30 days in jail, with all but five days suspended.

Greenwell, 69, had pleaded no contest to resisting arrest July 17 when he was stopped for speeding.

West Hawaii Today reports that an agreement dropping charges of resisting an order from a police officer and refusal to provide identification included no jail time.

During Monday’s sentencing, Ibarra told Greenwell he should have submitted to police even if he thought the arrest was unlawful. He gave defense attorney Eric Seitz 10 days to appeal the sentence.

Greenwell lost his bid for re-election in September.

Firefighters halt spread of fire in Hilo

HILO » Hawaii County firefighters say they were able to keep a fire from spreading in a historic, three-story wooden building.

One man was injured in the fire Sunday in a woodworking shop in the rear of the Moses Building at 100 Kamehameha Ave.

Firefighters said the shop was in flames when they arrived at about 12:38 p.m., but they were able to contain the fire to the rear of the building.

Damage was estimated at $250,000. If it had spread to neighboring businesses, firefighters estimate the damage could have hit $3.5 million.

The fire was extinguished at 5:45 p.m.

The building is also the former home of the Hawaii Cannabis Ministry. Federal agents raided the building this summer and arrested Roger Christie, the ministry’s founder, and 13 other people. Prosecutors allege Christie led a major marijuana growing, processing and distribution ring.
