With the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship already in hand, No. 2 Saint Louis had nothing more to gain than style points.

Marcus Mariota threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns in just more than a half, and Saint Louis finished off a perfect ILH season with a 34-12 victory over No. 8 Kamehameha last night at Aloha Stadium.

The Crusaders (9-1, 7-0) showed yet again why they are one of the two favorites in the upcoming Division I state tournament. After an early nonconference loss in August to No. 1 Kahuku at Carleton Weimer Field, Saint Louis responded by ripping through the ILH, showing the form of the dominant Crusaders teams of the 1980s and ’90s.

Saint Louis manhandled its two Division I league counterparts, Kamehameha and Punahou, winning a total of four games against the two schools by a combined score of 152-53.

‘Iolani, ranked higher than both Punahou and Kamehameha in this week’s Star-Advertiser Top 10, took its best shot against the Crusaders, but couldn’t do much in a 41-14 loss.

Overall Saint Louis averaged 42 points a game in league play while allowing an average of about 10.

"After we got our butts kicked at Kahuku we had to regroup and make sure that we were teaching first and making sure our boys understood what we’re trying to accomplish," first-year Saint Louis coach Darnell Arceneaux said. "Everything starts with the administration making the right changes, and it trickles all the way down in making sure we’re all on the same page at Saint Louis."

Saint Louis won’t play again for three weeks, earning the ILH’s automatic berth as one of the top two seeds in the state tournament. Last night’s game was the Crusaders’ first since beating Punahou to win the ILH title 13 days ago, putting Arceneaux in an intriguing spot of playing a meaningless game in a span of over a month between games that count.

"We told the kids we’re playing to win every game," Arceneaux said. "We understand that on any given day, things can be taken away from us, and I think we understand what we have, and we’re not going to let that happen."

Backup quarterback Kawai Mook-Garcia threw for 107 yards and a touchdown, and Keanu Mook-Garcia scored on a 4-yard touchdown run to give Saint Louis a 34-6 lead.

Kamehameha quarterback Christian Akana threw two touchdown passes as the Warriors, the defending state champions, saw a rocky season come to an end.

Kamehameha finished under .500 in league play and 5-5 overall, dropping games against the Crusaders (twice), ‘Iolani, Punahou and Farrington.
