Elderly woman struck by bus on Waikiki road

A school bus struck and critically injured an 89-year-old pedestrian yesterday afternoon in front of the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki, police said.

The pedestrian, a woman, was hit while on Kalia Road, Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.

Paramedics responded to the 4:42 p.m. call and took the woman in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center, officials said. Police shut down Kalia Road between Ena and Saratoga roads for an investigation.

Man to serve 33 months in prison for sex trafficking

A 22-year-old Aiea Heights man facing a mandatory minimum 10-year federal prison term for prostituting a 16-year-old girl and advertising her services on Craigslist will spend less than three years behind bars.

U.S. District Chief Judge Susan Oki Mollway sentenced Brad Yick Kin Young yesterday to 33 months in prison for one count of sex trafficking of a minor. Mollway ordered Young to begin his term in January so he can spend the holidays with his family.

Young apologized to the girl and her mother, who were in court yesterday but did not address the court regarding Young’s sentence.

The government had asked Mollway to sentence Young to between 41 and 51 months in prison to reward him for the assistance he provided in the indictment and prosecution of himself and four others.

Marine accused of stealing sentenced to more jail time

A federal judge sentenced a former Kaneohe Marine who stole military night-vision devices from a Marine Corps Base Hawaii armory, which he and other Marines sold to customers overseas on eBay, to 57 months in prison yesterday.

U.S. District Judge David Ezra ordered Ronald William Abram III to a second 57-month prison term for stealing an M-4 automatic rifle and selling it to another Marine.

Workers hurt in accident

Two contract workers were hurt yesterday morning in an electrical accident at the Lihue Wastewater Treatment Facility on Kauai and were taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.

The county had no word on their condition yesterday afternoon.

The men were working on a circuit breaker at around 11:10 a.m. when the accident occurred, according to a news release.

Blaze chars apartment

Fire damaged a two-bedroom apartment yesterday at the Alii Lani Townhomes complex in Kailua-Kona.

Big Island firefighters responding to the 3:22 a.m. alarm saw flames coming out of the mauka bedroom window of an apartment. Other units in the wooden building were evacuated. Firefighters extinguished the blaze about 30 minutes after they arrived. No one was injured.

The fire was contained to Unit 204 at the complex at 75-6081 Alii Drive. Damage was estimated at $60,000 to the apartment, which the manager said was in foreclosure, and $10,000 to its contents. The apartment below it suffered minor water damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
