Gunfire scatters melee, brings arrest

Police arrested a 21-year-old man yesterday after he allegedly fired a gun into the air during an early-morning street brawl at the corner of Sheridan and Rycroft streets.

The fight, which was reported just after 4 a.m., involved about 30 people and spilled into the roadway. The crowd dispersed after the shot was fired, police said.

Police recovered the gun and arrested the suspect at the scene.

The incident took place at the same intersection — the hub of several bars and restaurants behind the HMSA building and Walmart — where a police officer shot and wounded a man involved in an early morning altercation two months ago. In that case the suspect was allegedly handling a gun in a threatening manner after he and another man got into an argument with four other men.

Worker allegedly embezzled $100K

A 27-year-old Maili woman embezzled more than $100,000 from a Kalihi business where she worked, police said.

The woman, of a St. John’s Road address, was arrested Friday without incident at 1804 Hart St. She was booked on one count of first-degree theft and 98 counts of second-degree forgery.

Police said she used forged business checks to steal the money over a 22-month period.
