Five big plays from Hawaii’s 45-7 win at Utah State

MEL OTA / SPECIAL TO THE STAR-ADVERTISER
Miami's Davone Bess, a former Hawaii star, escaped a tackle by Pittsburgh's William Gay and scored a TD after a pass from Chad Henne.

1. CONTAINED

» Situation: Hawaii 0, Utah State 0, 12:29 remaining, first quarter, Utah State ball third and 5 at own 19
» The Play: QB Diondre Borel is harassed by the Hawaii defense and throws a wild incomplete pass intended for WR Travis Reynolds.
» Impact: For the fifth game in a row, Hawaii turns in a three and out on its opponent’s first possession. Hawaii holds Utah State to 90 yards and 0-for-5 on third-down conversions in the first half. For the game, Utah State gains 181 yards, the fewest Hawaii has allowed in five years.
» Hawaii coach Greg McMackin: "That was one of the best defensive efforts, if not the best, that I’ve been around for a long time."

2. GREEN MEANS GO

» Situation: Hawaii 7, Utah State 7, 9:34 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball first and 10 at Utah State 17
» The Play: RB Alex Green goes through a big hole and finishes for a 17-yard touchdown run.
» Impact: Hawaii takes the lead for good on Green’s second touchdown of the day. He also goes for scores of 36 and 60 yards in the second half, and finishes with a career-high 172 rushing yards and 24 more on pass receptions.
» Hawaii running backs coach Brian Smith: "He did a great job of turning it into another gear and finishing the run. We have a saying: Don’t get hawked. That means, don’t get caught from behind."

3. SPECIAL DELIVERY

» Situation: Hawaii 14, Utah State 7, 9:38 remaining, third quarter, Utah State ball fourth and 10 at own 25
» The Play: P Peter Caldwell fumbles the snap and is hit by John Hardy-Tuliau as he picks up the ball. The ball comes out again, David Graves catches it at the 6 and runs into the end zone for a touchdown.
» Impact: The big special teams play gives Hawaii a two-touchdown lead — which, even with plenty of time left, looms large with a steady rain falling and Borel having difficulties throwing the wet ball.
» Graves: "I saw that play in my mind before it happened. I’m always visualizing things that could happen in the game. I was thinking about the best thing that could possibly happen, and that was the best thing that could have happened."

4. PAREDES PICK

» Situation: Hawaii 21, Utah State 7, 8:44 remaining, third quarter, Utah State ball second and 3 at own 28
» The Play: Borel throws a pass across the middle that is intercepted by LB Corey Paredes.
» Impact: Green rushes 36 yards on the next play for a Hawaii touchdown. It is Paredes’ first career interception. He gets another later in the game that also leads to a Hawaii touchdown. Hawaii has 12 interceptions in its last five games.
» Paredes: "The tight end was pretty big. I saw the ball, and I jumped as high as I could, and I made the catch."

5. BECOMING ROUTINE

» Situation: Hawaii 31, Utah State 7, 14:23 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball first and 10 at Utah State 18
» The Play: QB Bryant Moniz finds SB Greg Salas near the goal line and lofts a pass where only he can get it. Salas stretches out to make a one-handed catch for the touchdown.
» Impact: Salas continues to make the spectacular routine with yet another circus catch. He finishes the game with nine receptions for 158 yards and is second in the nation in receiving yards per game. It is his 35th consecutive game with a catch. Moniz, who leads the nation in passing yards and total offense, continues his streak of at least one touchdown pass in every game this season. He ends the day with 389 passing yards.
» Salas: "Wasn’t that far up there. I’ve done better in practice."
