Vulcans sweep Antelopes

Hillary Hurley and Leilani Ramsey both had double-doubles to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 25-20, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15 win over Grand Canyon in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match yesterday at the UHH gym.

Hurley had 17 kills and 14 digs, and Ramsey 14 kills and 15 digs for the conference-leading Vulcans (14-3, 9-1). Kawena Cubi-Otineru and Rachael Tornquist added 10 kills each in UHH’s ninth consecutive win.

Sea Warriors outlast Seasiders in five

Hawaii Pacific upset Brigham Young-Hawaii 18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10 in a PacWest volleyball match at Cannon Activities Center. The Sea Warriors improved to 13-4 and 8-3, while the Seasiders dropped to 10-6 and 7-2.

Seasiders stay unbeaten

Seventh-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii broke open a tight match with three goals in the second half as the Seasiders topped Notre Dame de Namur 5-1 in a Pacific West Conference women’s soccer match in Laie yesterday. Emily Mearns had a goal and an assist for BYUH (11-0-2, 9-0-1) against the Argos (6-7-2, 4-5-2).

In the later men’s match, Notre Dame de Namur shut out BYU-Hawaii 3-0. McKay Harper had five saves for the Seasiders (2-9-1, 1-8-1) against the Argos (11-2-1, 8-1-1).

Kahui lifts Hawaii Pacific in OT

Kainoa Kahui headed in the match-winning goal in the ninth minute of overtime as Hawaii Pacific edged Dominican 2-1 in PacWest men’s soccer yesterday at Atherton Field.

Pierrick Cassin’s goal in the 34th minute put the Sea Warriors (8-6, 7-3 PacWest) up at halftime, but the Penguins (3-9-3, 3-6-2) came back to tie in the 74th minute on a goal by David Mendez. Kahui broke the deadlock with his header off a throw-in from Isaiah Guth, ending HPU’s four-match losing streak.

In the later women’s match, Amber Fuller scored twice in the second half and Carianne Makino had four saves to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 2-0 win over Dominican.

Fuller’s goals were 4 minutes apart as she scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute and off a pass from Sanoe Souza in the 52nd minute for the Sea Warriors (5-5, 5-6) in the win over the Penguins (6-4-1, 5-5-1).

Aspnaes, Puzey first in cross country

Hawaii Pacific’s Frida Aspnaes won her second consecutive women’s title and Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Thomas Puzey edged HPU’s Anders Ludvigsen in the men’s race of yesterday’s HPU Invitational cross country meet at Kualoa Ranch.

Aspnaes won the 5-kilometer event in 18 minutes, 54 seconds, finishing 10 seconds ahead of BYUH’s Katherine Buxton and 11 seconds ahead of Hawaii’s Dominique Miller. The Seasiders also won the team title with 29 points, with the Sea Warriors second (51).

In the tight men’s 8K race, Puzey was timed in 26:48 with Ludvigsen 1 second behind.

BYUH’s Justin Royer was third in 26:48. The Seasiders easily won the team title with 25 points, with the Sea Warriors second (52).

Warriors eliminated from regional

Hawaii’s Dennis Lajola lost his singles and doubles matches yesterday at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Tennis Championships in Irvine, Calif.

Lajola, seeded 11th, fell to UC Irvine’s Chris Kearney, the third seed, 6-1, 7-6, in the round of 16.

In doubles, seventh-seeded Clay Thompson and Daniel Kosakowski of UCLA topped Lajola and David Schuster 8-5, also in the round of 16.

Kodamatsu captures tennis singles title

Junko Kodamatsu defeated top-seeded Leilani Magee 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) to win the women’s singles championship of the Honolulu Masters on Saturday at the Oahu Club.

Magee and Kodamatsu will play for the doubles title tomorrow at 7 p.m. against second-seeded Katelyn Ching and Jenna Kappel. Men’s play continues through Saturday.
