It was a beautifully greasy, mud-brown night for the brown-and-gold Mililani Trojans.

Modifying their normally potent passing attack because of a 2 1/2-hour downpour before the game, the Trojans jumped to a 14-point lead and held on for a 21-14 win over Farrington in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red playoff action last night.

A crowd of about 1,500 at John Kauinana Stadium saw Mililani (8-1, 6-1) advance to the semifinal round. The No. 3-ranked Trojans will face Waianae, the only team it lost to during the regular season.

Farrington’s season ended on a nearly unplayable field that was almost entirely covered in mud by kickoff. The previous game, a JV contest between Farrington and Leilehua, went to three overtime periods, further compounding the footing problem.

Zachary Payomo followed his line for 102 rushing yards on 12 carries before leaving after a sideline collision. Coach Rod York said Payomo had a headache, but would probably be OK for next week’s game.

Trent McKinney overcame an early interception to throw for two touchdowns, both to Hassan Richardson. He finished 16-for-21 for 170 yards.

"We wanted to attack them, whatever they gave us. They played us man at times to the outside, so we went to our big playmakers," York said. "Trent put the ball right on target. A lot of credit goes to our center, Chase Yamada, and Trent for hanging onto the ball. We respected Farrington’s speed, so we didn’t try to do anything tricky."

"All week it’s been raining, so during practices, we do our thing," the 6-foot-4 Richardson said. "We had a scheme coming in, keep pounding and pounding, then go deep. Everything comes from practice."

The Trojans limited Farrington to 133 rushing yards.

Mililani’s first series was stopped short by Farrington’s defense. A pass from McKinney to the sideline was picked off by cornerback Bryston Doctolero. That gave the visitors first down at the Mililani 25-yard line, and they scored four plays later on quarterback Jared Hakuole’s 1-yard sneak over the goal line for a 7-0 lead with 5:21 to go in the first quarter.

The Trojans answered with an eight-play, 69-yard scoring march. Payomo’s 32-yard gain on a draw advanced the ball into the red zone, and McKinney scored on a 1-yard sneak to tie it at 7-all with 47 seconds remaining in the first.

Despite two holding penalties and two sacks, Mililani scored on its next possession. McKinney launched a third-and-long bomb to Richardson, who brought the ball in near the 10-yard line and scampered into the end zone as two Governors collided. The Trojans led 14-7 with 8:46 remaining in the first half.

"I was kind of nervous. It was an underthrown ball, so I thought it would be an interception," Richardson said. "But I adjusted to it and caught it, and I scored."

The Trojans ate more than 4 minutes off the clock to start the second half on a 53-yard drive. Richardson drew single coverage and pulled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from McKinney to give Mililani a 21-7 lead with 7:44 to go in the third.

"I knew I had one-on-one coverage, so I took advantage of it," Richardson said.

Farrington’s struggling offense finally came alive late in the third. A pass interference call helped the Govs, who got a 1-yard plunge from Tavale Masalosalo to cut the lead to 21-14 with 51 seconds to go in the third.

McKinney’s punting left Farrington with poor field position. The Govs began their next two possessions at their own 17- and 10-yard lines, and they failed to cross midfield until their last drive when they reached Mililani’s 25. A Hail Mary pass with no time left fell incomplete.
