Kaniho resigns from Kamehameha

Guy Kaniho, who led the Kamehameha boys volleyball team to state titles the past two seasons, has resigned after four years with the Warriors.

Kaniho, the school’s JV coach for six seasons, said he wanted to spend more time with his family. Kamehameha is accepting applications for his replacement.

 

Lajola wins at regionals

Senior Dennis Lajola won his singles and doubles matches yesterday as Hawaii continued competition at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Tennis Championships at Irvine, Calif.

The 11th-seeded Lajola advanced to the Round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over San Diego’s Clark Spinosa. Lajola teamed with David Schuster to top Cal Poly’s Alexander Sonesson and Brian McPhee 8-3.

UH’s Jeremy Tweedt was eliminated by 10th-seeded Raymond Sarmiento of USC 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

 

Top seeds play for masters titles

Top-seeded Leilani Magee will face her doubles partner Junko Kadomatsu, the second seed, in today’s women’s singles final of the Honolulu Masters Championships at The Oahu Club.

Men’s play continues Monday with top-seeded Hendrik Bode and Ikaika Jobe taking on Sebastian Bader and Ari Davis in a Round of 16 doubles match.

 

Neves into Idaho State HOF

Former Punahou quarterback Donavon "Don" Neves will be inducted into Idaho State’s Sports Hall of Fame during next Saturday’s homecoming weekend in Pocatello, Idaho.

After an all-America career at Boise Junior College (now Boise State), Neves earned all-America honors as the Bengals’ quarterback in 1965.

 

2 go for four-peats at XTERRA

Spain’s Eneko Llanos and Julie Dibens of Great Britain are going for historic fourth titles in tomorrow’s XTERRA World Championship off-road triathlon at Makena, Maui.

Llanos and Dibens also are among the 23 triathletes attempting to complete "The Double" by finishing both the Ironman and the XTERRA. Three triathletes from Hawaii — Mark Geoghegan, Eric Kollai and Stephen DeWald — also are going for "The Double."

The event is composed of a 1.5-mile swim, 20-mile mountain bike ride and 7-mile trail run. It begins at Maluaka Beach at 9 a.m.

 

Kwon eliminated at judo worlds

Kaneohe’s Anthony Kwon won his opening match but lost in the second round yesterday at the Junior World Judo Championships in Agadir, Morocco.

Kwon, who fights out of Hodokan Judo Club, was one of only two members of Team USA to win a match. In the 66kg division, he defeated French Junior National Champion Vincent Vallee by a waza-ari score to Vallee’s yuko but lost to Poland’s Grzegorz Lewinski by a yuko score.

 

Hilo sweeps Grand Canyon

Hillary Hurley pounded 14 kills and had 11 digs as the UH-Hilo volleyball team beat Grand Canyon 25-16, 25-22, 25-17 last night in Hilo.

The Vulcans improved to 13-3, 8-1 in the PacWest, while the Roadrunners dropped to 10-13 and 5-6.
