Maui man who killed son gets life sentence

WAILUKU — A Maui man convicted of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his 19-year-old son has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

The Maui News reports 47-year-old Joe D. Antonio must serve at least 20 years behind bars before being eligible for parole because he used a semiautomatic firearm.

Antonio apologized to his family and asked for forgiveness during Wednesday’s sentencing.

Jose Antonio Jr. was shot five times with a 45-caliber pistol in 2008 at the family’s residence in Kahului.

According to trial testimony, the two men had been arguing before the gunfire erupted.

Defense attorney Philip Lowenthal has said the senior Antonio was under extreme mental or emotional disturbance at the time.
