UH cashes in on USC game

The season opener with Southern California was the biggest home moneymaker in University of Hawaii football history, the school said.

The Sept. 2 game, for which 44,204 tickets were distributed, produced $1,107,000 in net revenue, the athletic department said. The figure is based on the face value of the tickets and stadium expenses and does not include premium charges for season tickets, UH said.

USC won the game, 49-36.

UH said it eclipsed the previous mark of $1,090,000 set by the 2007 sellout against Washington. That game completed UH’s unbeaten regular season and clinched the trip to the Sugar Bowl.

UH has not had a sellout at the 50,000-seat stadium since.

"I was pleased, considering the game took place on a Thursday night and was shown on national TV," said Jim Donovan, UH athletic director. "I know it was good for the university and the state, with 8,000 to 10,000 USC fans here for the game. It helped put people in the seats and the (hotel) beds."

USC athletic director Pat Haden said after the game he was in favor of extending the UH series. They are scheduled to play again in 2012 (at USC) and 2013 (at Aloha Stadium).
