Clear enough for you?

Tuesday night’s televised debate between 1st Congressional District rivals Charles Djou and Colleen Hanabusa was peppered with facts and figures, proposals and plans, cheers and jeers — and a healthy dose of the word "clear."

In posing and answering questions, the two candidates were, ah, clearly, addicted to the phrases "Let’s be clear here," "Let me be clear" or the pure and succinct, "clearly." The word was used no fewer than 22 times, according to one morning-after observation on debate co-sponsor Hawaii News Now.

Striving for clarity seemed to be the goal of the night. Whether the two succeeded — they are politicians, after all — was less clear. The two will have another go at it tonight, during a live debate at 7 p.m. on KHON.

Clearly, Hawaii is popular

Hawaii has risen to runner-up to California as the most desirable state to live, according to a Harris Poll.

Asked where they would like to live, aside from where they now live, baby boomers — ages 46 to 64 — and seniors picked Hawaii as No. 1, but California was the choice of younger Americans.

Throughout the past decade, Florida had been chosen as second overall behind California while Hawaii was the third-favorite.

Those surveyed were not provided the information that, unlike most other states, Hawaii exempts Social Security and all other state and private pension payments from the state income tax.
