UH experts discussing quake research with Chinese

Five University of Hawaii scientists, along with 15 mainland researchers in the fields of earthquake engineering and hazards, are meeting with their Chinese counterparts in China.

The group arrived in Beijing on Sunday and have focused on ideas to minimize future earthquake disasters. They’ve addressed construction design and codes, rehabilitation of existing structures, pre-disaster planning and emergency response.

On Tuesday, they traveled to Mianyang, the second largest city in Sichuan Province that was lightly damaged from the disastrous 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The quake killed nearly 70,000 people in nearby towns.

The group is to return to Beijing Friday for more meetings and will soon thereafter fly back to the United States.
