Moanalua High graduate Tadd Fujikawa is tied for seventh after shooting a 3-under-par 68 in the first round of the PGA Tour’s Q-School first stage yesterday. Fujikawa is playing at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C.

He parred his first 10 holes, then had four birdies over the next five. He bogeyed his final hole.

The 72-hole tournament runs through Friday. There are 77 players and the top 25 percent advance, approximately.

At the first stage in Dayton, Nev., Leilehua and University of Hawaii-Hilo graduate Nick Mason has a share of 21st after shooting 2-under-par 70. Mason double-bogeyed the first and 14th holes, but rallied with six birdies. There are 76 golfers in his stage.

Reigning Hawaii State Open champion Jesse Mueller, from Arizona, is tied for second at the first-stage qualifier in Santee, Calif., which was suspended because of bad weather. More than half the field did not finish, including King Kekaulike graduate Samuel Cyr, a two-time NAIA champ who won this year’s Mid-Pacific Open. Mueller shot 3-under-par 69 at Carlton Oaks Country Club, where 77 golfers are competing.

There are 13 first-stage qualifiers, including one at Turtle Bay next week. Top finishers advance to second-stage events at six sites in mid-November. Those survivors get into the final stage, Dec. 1-6 in Florida, where the low 25 and ties are exempt on next year’s PGA Tour.

Fujikawa had his $4,500 entry fee paid by the eGolf Tour because he finished among the Top 20 on the money list. He was fifth on the money list and won the eGOlf Tour Championship by nine shots. He also had a fourth-place finish at Irish Creek in July.
