Tyler Taumua has rested enough this season.

Tiring in the second half wasn’t going to be an issue.

The sophomore running back, who missed most of the season with a broken collarbone, scored on a 1-yard run with 2 minutes left in the game to give No. 9 Farrington a 10-0 victory over Aiea in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association playoffs last night at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Taumua carried the ball on 18 of Farrington’s 30 plays from scrimmage in the second half as the Governors (6-3) won a defensive battle. They’ll face West No. 1 seed Mililani next week.

"It feels good to come back on the field and play with my boys again," Taumua said. "Second half, everything just took off, the line started blocking good and everyone was doing their part."

The Governors held Aiea (4-5) to 22 total yards and got big plays from their special teams. Backup kicker Alexander More booted a 26-yard field goal and Farrington downed a punt at the Aiea 2-yard line late in the game, forcing Na Alii into poor field position.

"It was nice to have a game where special teams came through, especially since this year we were lacking in that area," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "We’re going to play next week, so you’ve got to be happy about that."

Offense has been a problem for Aiea all season and it continued last night. Quarterback Freddy Taliulu completed 60 percent of his passes (9-for-15), but only for 40 yards, as everything was quick and short.

"We’ve had some injuries at key positions, but we have to sit down as a coaching staff this offseason and try to figure some of these things out," Aiea coach Wendell Say said. "Our defense really played well, but it’s a lot to ask these guys to keep going out there with no rest and stopping the other team."

Senior Ilaio Sio had 10 tackles and junior Douglas Taumua, who was also used at running back, had nine tackles and blocked a punt.

Neither team converted a first down on its first two drives. Farrington senior Justin Vele blocked an Aiea punt, giving the Governors the ball on the Aiea 9-yard line.

Douglas Tautua returned the favor, blocking a field-goal attempt on the ensuing drive to keep the game scoreless.

The Governors finally got a first down late in the first quarter and got tricky on fourth down, faking a punt. Backup quarterback Travis Tamapua took the snap and found James Amina open for a 26-yard gain to push the ball to the Aiea 16.

Samson Maeva came up with a key sack on third down, forcing the Govs to kick a 26-yard field goal for the only score of the half.

The Governors had a chance to tack on points at the end, but Davyne Bantolina intercepted a Jared Hakuole pass in the end zone with 15 seconds remaining to end another promising Farrington drive.

Taumua finished with 72 yards on 21 carries and Hakuole carried the ball eight times for 40 yards and completed seven of 15 passes for 63 yards.
