Warriors open Can-Am with win

Steven Hunt had 12 kills and two aces in his first collegiate match in his native Canada and Jonas Umlauft added 12 kills to lead Hawaii over Guelph 25-15, 25-22, 25-20 to open the Can-Am Challenge men’s volleyball tournament in Alberta.

The Warriors play Manitoba and defending Canadian collegiate champion Calgary today and conclude the round-robin event tomorrow against host Alberta.

Maui Invitational field set

Five former NCAA champions highlight the field in next year’s EA SPORTS Maui Invitational, hosted by Chaminade.

The invitational, set for Nov. 21-23 at Lahaina Civic Center, features former champions Duke, Kansas, UCLA, Georgetown and Michigan, as well as Memphis, Tennessee and host Chaminade.

This year’s Nov. 22-24 field includes Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Virginia, Washington, Wichita State and the Silverswords.

Unbeaten BYUH No. 1 in region

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s soccer team was No. 1 in this week’s NCAA II West Region rankings, a first for the Pacific West Conference.

The Seasiders remained unbeaten with a 4-0 victory over Notre Dame de Namur yesterday in Laie. BYUH (9-0-2, 7-0-1) got two goals from midfielder Natalie Cude and three saves by goalie Megan McCain against the Argos (4-5-2, 2-3-2).

BYUH has given up only four goals all season and ranks in the top 10 nationally in goals-against average, shutouts and save percentage.

HPU women tip Dominican

Meghan Fuller followed up her on missed shot for the match’s lone goal in the 52nd minute as Hawaii Pacific edged Dominican 1-0 yesterday at the Hawaii Loa field.

Carianne Makino had three saves for the Lady Sea Warriors (4-7, 4-4), while Megan Herring had seven saves for the Penguins (4-6-1, 3-3-1).

Dominican men edge HPU

Pedro Guevara scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute to lift Dominican over Hawaii Pacific 1-0 in a PacWest men’s soccer match at the Hawaii Loa field.

Kay Flache had six saves for the Sea Warriors (7-5, 6-2 PacWest) against the Penguins (2-8-1, 2-5).

Argos blank Seasiders

Notre Dame de Namur scored two goals in the final 12 minutes to shut out Brigham Young-Hawaii 2-0 in Laie.

The Argos improved to 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the PacWest. The loss dropped the Seasiders to 2-8 and 1-7.

Vulcans, Seasiders stay in first

Hawaii-Hilo and Brigham Young-Hawaii won their respective PacWest volleyball matches yesterday in California to remain tied for the lead in the conference standings.

At Belmont, Calif., Hillary Hurley and Leilani Ramsey recorded double-doubles in UHH’s 25-19, 25-21, 32-30 sweep of Notre Dame de Namur in 83 minutes.

Hurley had 17 kills and 10 digs, and Ramsey 17 kills and 15 digs for the Vulcans (12-3, 7-1) against the Argos (3-11, 1-6).

At San Rafael, Calif., Julia Becker and Losaline Faka’osi each had 12 kills to lead BYUH past Dominican 25-15, 25-19, 29-27 in 85 minutes. Tanza Tupola added 10 kills and Nobuko Kotoyori 18 digs for the Seasiders (10-5, 7-1) against the Penguins (2-17, 0-8).

Silverswords swept on road

Crystal Powell had 10 kills and Tanya Alvino 22 assists and 10 digs as Chaminade fell to Academy of Art yesterday in San Francisco.

The Silverswords dropped to 4-11 overall, 1-7 PacWest. The Urban Knights (10-8, 6-3) got 17 digs from junior Leinani Keanini (‘Iolani ’08).
