Campbell High School junior Rudy Cabalar Jr. will try to recreate some North Shore magic this weekend when he plays the eighth annual Turtle Bay Amateur, on the Fazio and Palmer courses. Cabalar won the state high school championship at Turtle Bay in May.

A year ago, Bradley Shigezawa won his second Turtle Bay title in three years. Shigezawa is now a freshman at Northwestern and not in the field.

The Amateur features Championship, A, B and C flights. Those entered include Hawaii Golf Hall of Famers Wendell and Brandan Kop, Punahou senior Cyd Okino, Michael Fan, Mike Kawate, Todd Rego and Cory Oride.

Golfers tee off from 7:30 a.m. on both courses Saturday and Sunday.

21 teams in OCC match-play event

There are 21 teams in next week’s Nike Golf/Golf Concepts Four-Ball Match Play Championship, including defending champions Kevin Carll and Matt Pakkala. The tournament begins Monday at Oahu Country Club, with the final scheduled to start at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.

OCC head pro Andrew Feldmann and OCC member Larry Stubblefield are trying to win their eighth title. They won seven straight years, until getting ousted last year.

Other teams include OCC’s Shane Abe, with John Hearn, Dave Eichelberger and Mark Chun, and Pearl Country Club’s Regan Lee and Beau Yokomoto. Hilo Municipal’s Kevin Hayashi and Lance Taketa, who lost in last year’s final, also are playing.

The tournament has a Pro-Am on Monday afternoon. The first round tees off at 7 a.m. Tuesday with the second round to follow. Semifinals are at 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Refurbished Poipu to open Dec. 16

Poipu Bay Golf Course will reopen Dec. 16 with renovated greens. The Kauai course has been closed since April for a "comprehensive greens refurbishment project." The clubhouse also is being updated.

Poipu’s original Tifdwarf Bermuda grass was replaced with a Seashore paspalum hybrid that needs less fertilizer and is drought tolerant.

"The new greens will provide a more consistent speed year-round," said Poipu Bay director of golf Craig Sasada.
