Hawaii joins national prayer event

Two major public rosary rallies are scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday in remembrance of the last apparition of Our Lady at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. They are being held in conjunction with thousands of other prayer meetings held nationwide this month.

Tomorrow’s rally is at Thomas Square at 2:30 p.m. and is sponsored by United Hearts. It includes an assembly, a procession and a coronation, said organizer Josephine Yu, who can be reached at 545-3546.

Saturday’s rally will be held at the state Capitol at St. Damien’s statue from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the major event among some 150 rallies to be held statewide. They are being sponsored by the Public Square Rosary Crusade, an outreach of America Needs Fatima. Call spokeswoman Valerie Elefante for locations at 372-9043, or visit www.americaneedsfatima.org.

Contract for Kauai police chief ratified

The Kauai Police Commission has ratified a new contract for Police Chief Darryl Perry. The contract, described by Perry as open-ended, was ratified on Sept. 30 and took effect Oct. 1.

His previous three-year contract ended on Sept. 30.

Under the terms of the contract, Perry, 60, will continue to serve as police chief until he decides to resign, retire or is terminated by the commission if it finds he cannot effectively lead the department.

In 2007, Perry was sworn in as Kauai County’s seventh police chief. He oversees 128 officers and earns $107,335 a year.

Some of the projects Perry will focus on include accreditation of the department, and upgrading Kapaa and Waimea police substations and its dispatch system and record management system.

Perry also said he plans to get the department more involved in youth programs. In the next couple of months, a youth center the department assisted in developing with the community and Mahelona Hospital is expected to open near the hospital.
