Bill limiting fireworks on Oahu is signed by Caldwell

Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell this afternoon signed a bill into law prohibiting most consumer uses of fireworks on Oahu.

The law takes effect Jan. 2, 2011.

Common firecrackers will be allowed under Bill 34, and Oahu residents would need to get $25 permits for them as they now do for New Year’s, Chinese New Year and the Fourth of July.

They could also obtain such permits for religious and cultural occasions.

But all other fireworks, from sparklers to fountains, will be barred.

The City Council passed the bill 7-2.
