Mayor-elect Peter Carlisle will have to wait another weekend before he can be sworn in for his new job.

Carlisle was expected to be sworn in as the new Honolulu mayor Friday, but because that day is a furlough day for the city clerk and the state courts, the ceremony has been delayed until Oct. 11.

"It has just come to our attention that a Supreme Court order issued by former Chief Justice (Ronald) Moon has resulted in a change to the 20-day challenge period after the election for the newly elected mayor and prosecutor," City Clerk Bernice Mau wrote in an e-mail to City Council members.

Moon’s order, dated Oct. 23, 2009, indicates that court furlough days be treated as a weekend day.

Because the court would be on furlough Friday, the last day for any potential challenge to be filed, Oct. 11 now becomes the last day for any such challenge.

Carlisle won the Sept. 18 special election for mayor with 39 percent of the vote. Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell was second with 35 percent.

By law the swearing-in cannot take place until 20 days after the election, to allow for any challenges to be filed.
