Overturned boat’s crew rescued by passing vessel

The crew of a commercial vessel rescued two boaters yesterday from a capsized sailboat almost two miles off Kahala Beach.

A 24-foot powerboat, the Marlin Queen, was towing the unregistered 20-foot sailboat when it capsized, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael De Nyse reported.

The Coast Guard district command center got the mayday call for a vessel in distress at 3:38 p.m.

It launched its 45-foot rescue boat at 3:50 p.m.

A commercial vessel, the Tailwalker, was a half-mile from the distressed sailboat and responded to the call for help. The Tailwalker’s crew plucked two people from the water.

It was unclear why the Marlin Queen could not come to the aid of the people in the water.

"It’s great that we have good Samaritans out there that could come to the aid of their fellow mariners," De Nyse said.

When the Coast Guard’s 45-foot response boat arrived at about 4:30 p.m., the sailboat was found dismasted and overturned, De Nyse said. The Coast Guard is investigating the incident.
