Navy sailors help rescue fisherman and flipped boat

Three Navy sailors with Marine Corps Base Hawaii’s waterfront operations unit rescued a fisherman whose boat capsized about 10 miles north of Kaneohe Bay yesterday.

The Honolulu Fire Department received a call at 2:09 p.m. reporting an overturned boat and contacted Marine Corps Base Hawaii at 2:15 p.m.

The Marine base dispatched two boats at 2:20 p.m. and located the overturned 10-foot, single-engine fishing vessel within an hour, said 2nd Lt. Diann Olson, Marine spokeswoman.

The fisherman was wearing a life jacket and was on top of the capsized vessel in good condition, she said. The man’s friend came in another boat and picked him up.

Rescue personnel flipped the boat over, removed the water and towed the boat back to Kaneohe Bay, where it was released to its owner, Olson said.

Inmate, 26, climbs fence in attempt to escape OCCC

A 26-year-old man allegedly tried to escape from Oahu Community Correctional Center yesterday morning.

The inmate made the attempt at 9:30 a.m., according to the Honolulu police booking log.

The man was with a group of inmates returning from recreation when he started climbing the fence, said Michael Hoffman, Department of Public Safety Institutions Division administrator.

Hoffman said the inmate responded to verbal directives to come down.

The case is under investigation.

7 drunken teenagers get stranded atop roof

Seven teenagers, between the ages of 16 and 18, found themselves stuck on a roof in Makiki after a night of binge drinking and had to be rescued by firefighters early yesterday morning, a Fire Department spokesman said.

The teenagers climbed to the roof of a building at 1351 S. Beretania St. but could not climb down and called the Fire Department at about 3 a.m. yesterday.

Firefighters used the aerial ladder on one of their trucks and lowered the teenagers individually using a system of ropes, pulleys and a stretcher.

Brush fire in ravine burns a quarter of an acre

A brush fire near Whitmore Village burned about a quarter-acre yesterday deep in a ravine, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

The fire did not threaten any property, and no one was injured, he said.

Fire companies were dispatched to the blaze at 2:37 p.m. and had it contained by about 4 p.m.

Police seek witnesses to robbery

HILO » Big Island police are looking for witnesses to a robbery that occurred at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday at the 76 service station at Ainako Avenue and Kaumana Drive in Hilo.

A male wearing a dark sweat shirt and dark pants displayed a knife and demanded money, police said.

He then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. He was last seen running up Ainako Avenue.

Occupants of a dark Scion with after-market rims seen in the station’s parking lot during the robbery are possible witnesses.

Police ask that anyone who knows the identity of the occupants of the Scion call officer Donovan Kohara or officer Clive Okino at the Police Department’s nonemergency line, 935-3311.
