Hurley leads Vulcans to victory

Hillary Hurley pounded 16 kills to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 25-23, 25-18, 25-17 women’s volleyball victory over Hawaii Pacific last night in Hilo.

Leilani Ramsey added 13 kills for the Vulcans (6-2, 1-1 Pacific West).

Kelly Balanay led HPU (7-2, 1-1) with 10 kills.

HPU blanks Academy of Art

Five different players scored to push Hawaii Pacific to a 5-0 men’s soccer win over Academy of Art yesterday in Kaneohe.

Richard Guffens, George Fochive, Kimo Komomua, Isaiah Guth and Jimmy Baggett all scored for the Sea Warriors (4-1, 3-0 PacWest), while Chance Bukoski added three assists.

Academy of Art dropped to 1-6 and 0-4.

Sea Warriors drop Urban Knights in women’s match

Meghan Fuller scored twice and Yasmina Taketa and Jacqueline Ho added one goal each to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 4-0 women’s soccer win over Academy of Art.

The Sea Warriors improved to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights dropped to 1-4-1 and 0-4.

Vulcans seventh at golf tourney

Hawaii-Hilo finished in seventh place out of 17 teams at the St. Martin’s Invitational golf tournament at Lacey, Wash., yesterday.

Neil Cabico led the Vulcans with a three-round total of 1-over 217. He was 11 strokes behind medalist Xavier Dailey (10-under 206) of the winning Western Washington team.

Aspnas, Puzey win in cross country

HPU’s Frida Aspnas and Brigham Young-Hawaii’s Thomas Puzey were the men’s and women’s winners at yesterday’s Chaminade Invitational cross country race.

The Alaska Fairbanks women and the BYUH men won the team competitions.

Aspnas won the 5K women’s race in 18 minutes, 31.75 seconds, ahead of second place Raphaela Sieber (18:43.40) of the Nanooks.

Puzey captured the 8K men’s race in 25:54:28. Teammates Mathew Gulden (26:08.26) and Justin Royer (26:115.03) took second and third place.

UH’s Tuson-Turner fifth in sailing

University of Hawaii sailor Hannah Tuson-Turner placed fifth at the PCCSC Women’s Singlehanded Championship yesterday.

Tuson Turner (63) finished 33 points behind event winner Annie Rossie (30) of Cal State Channel Islands.
