Man arrested over mayhem on Big Island

Hawaii island authorities charged an 18-year-old Puna man Friday on numerous criminal charges including assault and auto theft in connection with an Aug. 20 incident in which occupants of a car smashed the window of another car in the Hawaiian Beaches subdivision.

A police task force raided an Ainaloa home on Tiki Court early Friday morning and arrested Ronsten Andrade.

Andrade allegedly tried to flee, but officers caught him and arrested him.

On Aug. 20, police said the occupants of a Mitsubishi sedan smashed the window of a Honda Civic in Hawaiian Beaches and that the Mitsubishi sideswiped the Honda before fleeing the scene.

Andrade was arrested and charged later Friday with suspicion of second- and third-degree assault, two counts of second-degree criminal property damage, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, three counts of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and contempt of court.

Andrade was also arrested on several bench warrants and a number of investigations, police said.

Bail was set at $72,000.

Authorities also arrested and charged August Fernandez, 23, of Ainaloa with hindering prosecution.

Stalled flow creates show inside Puu Oo

Lava from Kilauea Volcano continued to flow into the sea at one spot over the weekend, while a stalled flow generated an incandescent light show on the floor of Puu Oo Crater, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Meanwhile, four small earthquakes, about magnitude 2.0, were recorded beneath Kilauea, one under the middle southwest rift zone and three on south flank faults.
