Smoke diverts Maui flight to San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — A US Airways flight from Phoenix to Hawaii has landed safely at San Francisco International Airport after the pilot declared an emergency because of smoke in the cockpit.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the Boeing 757 landed in San Francisco just after 5 p.m. Friday.

Airport spokesman Michael Brown says the plane landed "uneventfully" and taxied to the gate. No injuries were reported.

US Airways says the flight to Kahului was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members. Spokeswoman Liz Landau says the emergency was declared as a precaution.

The diverted passengers were to be put on another US Airways flight for their delayed trip to Hawaii.
