Investigators suspect arson in fire that approached Poamoho houses

Fire investigators say they suspect a brush fire that burned close to houses in Poamoho Camp in Wahiawa today was intentionally set because of a witness statement and the pattern of the burn markings.

The fire forced Honolulu police to close Kaukonahua Road about 1:30 p.m.

Police closed Kaukonahua at Wilikina Drive and Kamananui Road because the wildfire is getting too close.

Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said nine fire companies, five or six tankers, and a helicopter were at the scene.

There have been no evacuations, but residents in the Poamoho Camp watered down their lawns to keep the flames from advancing, police said.

Also some of the residents dug fire breaks and one beat down the flames with a shovel as the fire neared his home.

The winds blew the fire away from the old plantation camp, and firefighter say they will monitor the area and keep the fire from returning.
