WASHINGTON » Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis, known for his outspoken viewpoints, had plenty to say on the radio yesterday about women reporters in NFL locker rooms.

The league swiftly condemned his comments as inappropriate and offensive, and Portis later issued an apology through the Redskins.

Addressing the NFL’s investigation of the New York Jets’ treatment of TV Azteca reporter Ines Sainz, Portis said that both sides have wandering eyes when the sexes are mixed in such a setting.

"I think you put women reporters in the locker room in position to see guys walking around naked, and you sit in the locker room with 53 guys, and all of a sudden you see a nice woman in the locker room. I think men are going to tend to turn and look and want to say something to that woman," Portis said in his weekly appearance on 106.7 The Fan.

The Jets are being investigated by the NFL after a few players made catcalls directed at Sainz on Saturday while she was waiting to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Jets’ Jenkins out for season

Kris Jenkins’ comeback lasted less than one quarter.

The New York Jets’ defensive tackle will miss the rest of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his surgically repaired left knee in the team’s opening loss to Baltimore on Monday night.

"Obviously, that’s going to be a huge blow for us," coach Rex Ryan said yesterday. "Again, we’re about the team, but I just feel really bad for Kris."

Grant gone for season

Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant is out for the season after being placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury he got in the season-opening win against the Eagles.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that Grant suffered a "significant" ankle injury that involved ligament damage in Green Bay’s 27-20 win at Philadelphia on Sunday.

Maroney dealt to Broncos

The New England Patriots traded running back Laurence Maroney to the Denver Broncos.

The Patriots receive undisclosed draft considerations in the deal made yesterday that reunites their first-round draft choice in 2006 with Josh McDaniels, New England’s offensive coordinator before becoming Denver’s coach last season. The trade is pending a physical examination.

Maroney hasn’t emerged as a solid No. 1 back since being drafted out of Minnesota. In four seasons, he rushed for 2,430 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Dixon stays as Steelers QB

Dennis Dixon didn’t throw a touchdown pass, stretch the defense with his running or do anything to suggest he won’t be back on the bench when Ben Roethlisberger’s suspension is over.

What mattered most to Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was that Dixon didn’t lose.

Tomlin said Dixon will be Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback Sunday at Tennessee, even though the injured Byron Leftwich may return to practice as early as today.

Lions sign Vasher

Detroit signed former Pro Bowl defensive back Nathan Vasher yesterday.

The Chicago Bears released Vasher in March.

Sources: Jets sign Clowney

Two people with knowledge of the deal tell the Associated Press that the New York Jets have re-signed wide receiver David Clowney.

Clowney, who was cut on Sept. 5, was back with the team yesterday, according to the people who spoke on condition of anonymity because the Jets had not announced the deal.

Unger out for the season

Seahawks guard Max Unger, a former Hawaii Prep standout who played at Oregon, was placed on injured reserve yesterday and will miss the rest of the season after suffering an injury to the big toe on his left foot against San Francisco on Sunday.
