It wasn’t so long ago that a sophomore stepped into the spotlight and delivered his team to a monumental win over a higher-ranked opponent.

This time, the man-child is Reece Foy. Delivering a performance that brought to mind one-time super soph Andrew Manley during his reign at Leilehua, Foy passed for 167 yards and ‘Iolani’s defense thwarted Kamehameha for a 13-6 win last night at Aloha Stadium.

Foy, doing figure-8s out of the pocket like Fran Tarkenton, frustrated Kamehameha’s pass rushers and got off pass after pass. The Warriors finished with just one sack.

Eighth-ranked ‘Iolani, the four-time defending Division II state champion, defeated No. 5 Kamehameha for the second time in as many seasons and improved to 2-0 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (4-1 overall).

Kamehameha, the defending D-I state champion, fell to 0-2 in league play (2-3 overall).

The Raiders saved a whole new package of defensive trickery for the game, looking nothing like the squad that gave up 43 points at Mililani a month ago.

"The whole week, we came out more conditioned than ever. We worked on stunts, swarming to the ball. Today, we pulled out all the stops," linebacker Cody Petro-Sakuma said.

Kamehameha was down 13-0 with ‘Iolani driving late in the third quarter when Micah Choy picked off a pass by Foy at the 5-yard line and returned it 70 yards. The Warriors didn’t capitalize on that possession, but eventually scored on a 2-yard toss from Christian Akana to tight end Keoni Bush-Loo with 5:23 left.

The Warriors got the ball back with 1:34 left at their 35-yard line and drove to the ‘Iolani 9-yard line as Akana found Charley Bollig IV for a series of completions. However, Akana’s next four passes fell incomplete, including a lob to Brock Ruelke in the corner of the end zone that was ruled out of bounds.

‘Iolani got the ball back with seconds to play and ran out the clock.

"Our defense shut down an offensive team like that to six points," Raiders coach Wendell Look said, also giving kudos to Foy. "He’s capable of making plays with his arm and his legs. He’s young and he’ll make mistakes, but we’ll live with ’em. He grew up a lot today."

The Raiders played defense with a renewed passion, shutting down Kamehameha’s offense, which had just 40 total yards in the first half.

Bret Christman’s 7-yard touchdown catch from a scrambling Foy gave the Raiders a 7-0 lead with 9:11 left in the first quarter.

Jordan Lee drilled a 31-yard field goal with 1:22 to go in the first for a 10-point margin.

The Warriors were in ‘Iolani territory just once before intermission after a fumble recovery by Maka Pickard, but an illegal-use-of-hands penalty set them back and the drive stalled.

Moments later, a Kamehameha punt was muffed by the Raiders at the 11-yard line and the Warriors recovered. However, an interference penalty was assessed to the Warriors and the Raiders escaped danger.

Lee tacked on a 21-yard field goal with 14 seconds remaining in the first half for a 13-0 Raiders lead.

From that point on, ‘Iolani’s no-huddle, ball-control passing game managed the clock with precision and almost no turnovers.

"Our line did a great job. Kamehameha is probably one of the best defenses in the state," Foy said. "Dave Miyamoto, Micah Garrido, Tiras Koon, Matt Noguchi, Ryo Chow — they contained (Koa Ka’ai) and made plays for me, and I feed off them."

No. 2 Saint Louis 66, Damien 0

The Crusaders amassed three interceptions and six sacks, permitting just negative 2 total yards of offense by the Monarchs.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota was 6-for-10 for 120 yards before Duke Bukoski and Kawai Mook-Garcia took over. Mariota tossed touchdown passes of 9, 37 and 23 yards, the latter coming on a fourth-and-8 play with Kaeo Aliviado the target.

Linebacker Kawena Ortiz returned a pick 54 yards for a touchdown.

No. 3 Punahou 17, Pac-Five 0

Steven Lakalaka rushed for 144 hard-earned yards, including a 1-yard burst to seal the win.

Punahou improved to 3-0 overall and is 1-0 in league play. Pac-Five slipped to 0-4 overall after losing its ILH opener.
