It’ll be run vs. pass when Army faces Hawaii tomorrow
PARK RIDGE, N.J. » It will be a clash of football styles — and eras — when Hawaii and Army meet tomorrow in Michie Stadium.
Both teams employ two-receiver, two-slotback offenses and attacking defenses. But while the Warriors’ four-wide offense is geared toward the pass — their best receivers are slotbacks Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares — the Black Knights’ offense is grounded in a triple-option scheme.
On defense, the Warriors have as many as seven defensive packages culled from a 418-page playbook. The Black Knights run multiple blitz schemes out of a basic double-eagle formation.
Although this is only the second football meeting between the schools, Army will evoke many fond memories for UH fans. Army head coach Rich Ellerson is a UH graduate and former Warrior defensive coordinator. Chris Smeland, also a former UH defensive coordinator, runs the double-eagle scheme that was successful for the Warriors for several years.
